What Is the Carbohydrate Content in Shepherd’s Pie?
It all relies on the recipe you choose for your shepherd’s pie and the items you utilize. I picked low-carb components for this main dish recipe since it was designed to be keto-friendly, and I had to make a few substantial alterations to the original recipe. As a result, one serving of such a shepherd’s pie has just 4 grams of carbohydrates. And this is incredible!
Typically, classic shepherd’s pie has a lot of carbohydrates and isn’t even close to being keto-friendly (unless you throw away the potato mash layer and avoid adding high carb veggies into the meat sauce).
Ingredients Required for Meat Sauce
Because the goal was to develop a low-carb meal, there are a few big modifications between this Shepherd’s Pie on the Keto Diet and the original recipe. First and foremost, this pie is devoid of potatoes.
There’s also no lamb flesh. You may substitute lamb meat for the beef I used in the recipe if you like. But since I’m not a big lover of lamb, I chose to stick with what I know – a mix of beef and pork.
Another distinction is that I didn’t use any vegetables that are rich in carbohydrates. Many people enjoy carrots, peas, and corn in their shepherd’s pie, but it won’t make it any worse if you leave them out.
So, here are the items I used to make the beef sauce for my low-carb shepherd’s pie:
- Beef patty
- Pork that has been ground (or ground turkey)
- Olive oil is a kind of oil that comes from
- a spoonful of tomato paste or diced tomatoes
- Beef broth or chicken broth
- Salt
- Pepper
When preparing the meat layer, add a teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce or a tablespoon of coconut aminos to enhance the taste.
Cauliflower mash forms the top layer of this low-carb shepherd’s pie. That’s a tasty and low-carb substitute for classic mashed potatoes.
Cauliflower Mash: How to Make It
Prepare the following Ingredients For the cauliflower mash layer, combine the following ingredients in a mixing bowl.
- Cauliflower florets – I used fresh cauliflower, but you can use boiled frozen cauliflower instead if you want to save time;
- Butter – don’t overlook this ingredient since it gives the cauli mash a beautiful creamy texture;
- Sour cream – I enjoy the flavor of sour cream in my mashed cauliflower, but you may always substitute cream cheese or heavy cream if you prefer;
- Minced garlic – a definite YES here, and don’t even attempt to replace it with garlic powder since the flavor will be drastically different;
- Eggs – remember to add them just after the cauliflower florets have fully cooled;
- There’s never enough cheese in a cauliflower mash, whether it’s mozzarella or cheddar.
You’ll also need some salt and pepper, of course.
